The Pennsylvania Bike-a-Thon for Environmental Justice will hold its second-week ride, peddling from North Philadelphia to the City of Chester. Sponsored by Clean Water Action, the event is being held to showcase local environmental justice issues and to raise funds for Clean Water Action work on these issues, This weekend’s journey will add to the 26-mile trip last Saturday on the Harrisburg Capital Area Greenbelt to bring attention to the health impact of the Harrisburg Incinerator.
This coming Saturday, November 4th bikers will assemble to begin their ride at Fernhill Park near the site of the Nicetown Combined Heat & Power plant. The group will travel to the Falls Bridge and Martin Luther King Drive where they will be met by riders who support the cause by riding 5 miles on the Schuylkill River Trail and a rally at the Schuylkill River Park. The trip will continue to South West Philly passing the junkyard and tire dumps in the neighborhoods of Kingsessing and Elmwood, to Eastwick, the site of the Clearview Landfill and chronic flooding. The trip will end 12 miles later in the City of Chester passing the site of the proposed Penn Liquified Natural Gas Plant and the Chester Waste to Energy Incinerator.
Both trips will feature stops and brief presentations and discussions with local residents that will be recorded on Facebook in real-time, the lead rider conducting the interviews will be Maurice Sampson an environmental advocate for 52 years currently serving as the Eastern PA Director of Clean Water Action.
The public is encouraged to sponsor Maurice or join the 5-mile ride that will begin at Martin Luther King Jr, Drive and the Falls Bridge to Schuylkill River Park near South Street.
Bikes will assemble at 9 a.m. in Fern Hill Park near Roberts & Wissahickon Ave and meet riders at Falls Bridge between 10 and 10:20 a.m. The organizers expect to arrive at Scrap Yards in South West Philly (3100 S 62st Street) between 12 -12:30 noon the Eastwick Park at 80th Street between 1 – 1:15. The trip will end in Chester at Grace St & W Front St at 4 PM
