The Rotary Club of Southwest Philadelphia held a Flags for Heroes Memorial Day weekend.  Community members sponsored flags that flew over the weekend to honor their personal heroes.  Many of the heroes served in the military, but others were nurses and other front-line workers during the pandemic.

61 flags were placed on land next to the Fire Marshal’s office on Island Avenue, at the base of the bridge, on Friday, May 28th and were removed June 1st.

A ceremony was held on May 29th to further honor the heroes.  Boy scouts opened the ceremony with the color guard. All of the names of the honorees were read and “Taps” was played on a trumpet.

The Rotary Club meets (virtually) each Wednesday morning at 7:30. The Club supports the community in a variety of ways.  Their next event is installing a mini-library called Book Ark at Myers Rec. Center on June 26th at 11:00 a.m.   For more information on the club, follow them on Facebook or visit their website at http://www.rotaryclubofsouthwestphiladelphia.com/
