Honoring Former State Representative James R. Roebuck Jr.

Former Pennsylvania State Representative James R. Roebuck Jr. died on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the age of 79. Roebuck was born in Philadelphia and was a graduate of Central High School, he continued his education and earned his B.A. from Virginia Union University in 1966 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1969 and 1977, respectively. He worked as an assistant professor of history at Drexel University from 1977 to 1984.

Representative Roebuck won a special election on May 21, 1985, to represent the 188th District in the Pennsylvania House and was re-elected 17 times. The 188th District is made up of many Southwest and West Philly neighborhoods. He was chairman of the House Education Committee and fought for funding for education. 

Southwest CDC Executive Director, Donna Henry shares that “Southwest and West benefited from Rep. Roebuck’s dedication to serving his district for so many years.  He was a champion for improving public education that was inspiring.”
