SELF Inc., the city’s unique housing shelter group, has announced the commencement of a new emergency food program to meet urgent needs for its neighbors in Southwest.

According to Chef Rickey Hill, the organization’s food service director, beginning on February 23, emergency meal parcels will be provided in the parking lot of Outley House at 6901Woodland Avenue. The provision is available in cooperation with the leading food bank in Philadelphia, SHARE Food Program.

“The hours of operation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.,” indicated Hill who directs a kitchen that prepares over 180,000 meals a year for the 8 SELF Inc. shelters around the city.

“It will be necessary to sign up in advance for these emergency food parcels by emailing infoselfincorp.org or calling 215-496-9610, and asking the receptionist to be connected with the ‘Food Services.’”

Residents who qualify for the new SELF Inc./SHARE program are requested to bring their own bags.

The new weekday program is in addition to the ongoing weekly curbside food parcel distribution which takes place in front of Outley House just north of the corner of Woodland Avenue and 70th Street on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month beginning at 10:00 a.m.
