The polls opened at six locations in Southwest on August 29 for the latest election of 15 members and alternates of the Southwest Neighborhood Advisory Sub-Committee (NAS). The current slate of candidates was composed of 21 area residents representing all of Southwest Philadelphia, who graciously stepped up to serve a two-year term on the Sub-Committee.

Close to 400 SW residents voted in the election. Special Thanks to the NAS Election Committee members who’s volunteer efforts made it happen; Christine Riddick, Hannah Bryant, Doug Paige, Cynthia Oduwole and Chris Benjamin, and a special Shout-out to Akeem Ali, Laverne Moody, Anthony Wilson, Rose Parson, and Joe Purnell for the use of his facility at NUAD. All of this would not be able to take place if the polling places weren’t available, The Common Place at 58th & Chester Avenue, the 7th Day Adventist Church on South 58th Street, The Kingsessing Library, The First Baptist Church of Paschall Annex, and Shoprite on Island Avenue.

Typical of the candidates is Adriane Parks who lives in the Wheeler Street area. “Where we live is like a cul-de-sac where we feel separated from the rest of the community,” Parks indicated. “I’m running for the
NAS to make sure that our neighborhood, and especially the children and seniors, get the resources and services they need and deserve.”
This election was monitored by the Division of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and organized by Southwest CDC Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC), 6328 Paschall Avenue. Its members accept the responsibility of implementing and monitoring the programs and services of the (DHCD). For more information about the NAS and its on-going activities, contact NAC Coordinator.
