State Representative Joanna McClinton considers local organizations that spend their time improving the quality of life in our community to be “Boots and the Ground!” She made her remarks March 27 outside her office at 52 South 60th Street where she joined Walmart executive Jason Klipa to present each of four local nonprofits with a $2,000 grant check. The organizations included:

  –  The Common Place

  –  African Cultural Alliance of North America (ACANA)

  –  Greater Hope Ministries

  –  The Black Brain Campaign

The Common Place at 58th Street and Chester Avenue provides enrichment programs after school hours and Saturdays for children and holistic care for families of Southwest. It is a sacred space that is home to the Salt and Light congregation. Rev. Christopher Holland is the Director of the Common Place; Rev. Cean James is pastor of Salt and Light, and Director of CityLights Ministry.  To find out more, visit thecommonplacephilly.org or phone|267-275-8238.

“My top priority is and has always been the health and safety of my neighbors, and I’m blessed to have local organizations who share my commitment – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rep. McClinton who is also Leader of the PA House Democratic Caucus. “From critical resources and mental health help to educational and emotional support, these nonprofits are working tirelessly to put our most vulnerable communities first. Investing in their success is investing in the success of Southwest Philly.”

“The Walmart Foundation is proud to support these organizations in Philadelphia,” said Jason Klipa, director of public affairs and government relations for Walmart. “They are doing excellent work in their communities and one of the core pillars of Walmart is to help give back in the communities we serve.”

ACANA, located at 5530 Chester Avenue provides a wide variety of social services to SW residents which can be reviewed at www.facebook.com/ACANA.Philadelphia

Greater Hope Ministries at 7029 Woodland Avenue hosts a worship community and Greater Hope Christian Academy elementary school.

The Black Brain Campaign seeks to eliminate the stigma of mental health problems through education and resources. For more information, visit: www.facebook.com/TheBlackBrainCampaign/

McClinton previously worked with Walmart to present $6,000 in grant funding last December to Gateway to RE-entry, New Options More Opportunity and We REIGN Inc.
