25th Annual event at Clark Park features great “chillin and grilling” for all

Ready for some old-fashioned “grillin’ and chillin?”  Well, it’s Woodland Avenue Reunion & Cookout time again.  Saturday, September 10 is the 25th silver anniversary of the event organized by the Woodland Avenue Reunion Association.

“Southwest residents, current and past, and their extended family and friends are warmly invited to bring grills, chairs, tables, blankets, trash bags and tons of great food to Clark Park between Woodland and Chester Avenues at 43rd to 45th Streets,” advised the Reunion’s president, Priscilla Ware.  “The festivities will begin at 12:00 Noon and conclude at 6:30 p.m.,”

A word to the wise, attendees are cautioned to park all cars in designated parking spots only since those which block driveways or other no-parking zones will probably be ticked.

As usual, on stage at 43rd Street and Kingsessing Avenue there will be live entertainment, guest speakers, music, dancing, and a great DJ.

“The Woodland Avenue started in 1997 when a group of friends got together to have a cookout,” recalled Ware.  “Southwest was going through a lot of things we are experiencing today.  Allen Diggs thought it would help bring the entire community together if we could make the gathering an annual event – not just for one day.”

”The Woodland Avenue Reunion Association was created to help restore our community and let our local councilmembers provide useful information on resources to our residents and especially to seniors.

And over the years we’ve collected donations for specific needs.  For instance, we funded a washer and dryer and classroom supplies for the schools – and monetary gifts as well.

But without the perseverance of our honorary President Allan Diggs, Woodland Avenue Reunion wouldn’t have continued for 25 years, and we salute him for that!
