Africatown Signage Reveiled

On June 5, applause filled the intersection of 60th Street and Woodland Avenue as residents, business owners, elected officials, and community leaders gathered for a historic moment: the unveiling of the new Africatown sign, officially recognizing Southwest Philadelphia as a vibrant center of African and Caribbean culture.

This ceremony marked more than just the installation of a sign; it celebrated decades of history, entrepreneurship, immigration, resilience, and community pride. Organized by the African Cultural Alliance of North America (ACANA), the event launched a broader vision to establish Africatown as a cultural, economic, and tourism destination, honoring the families and businesses that have shaped the Woodland Avenue community for generations.

Leaders from all levels of government came together, pledging their support for the Africatown initiative. Philadelphia City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier spoke about the importance of investing in Southwest Philadelphia and preserving the neighborhood's diverse cultures while supporting local families.

The event also acknowledged the contributions of Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, Pennsylvania House Majority Appropriations Chairman Jordan Harris, Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, U.S. Representative Mary Gay Scanlon, and Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, whose partnerships have been instrumental in advancing the Africatown vision.

The unveiling of Africatown signifies a commitment to recognizing and celebrating the people, businesses, and traditions of the community for years to come.
