Lottie Bazemore, Beloved Community Leader and Lifelong Democratic Committee Person, Dies at 95

Lottie (nee Washington) Bazemore, a devoted community activist, longtime Democratic Committee Person, and cherished Southwest Philadelphia matriarch, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 26, 2026. She was 95 years old.

For more than 51 years, Mrs. Bazemore faithfully served as Democratic Committee Person for Philadelphia's 51st Ward, 18th Division. Throughout her decades of service, she worked alongside many distinguished Philadelphia leaders, including Ward Leader Vivian Miller, Marian Tasco, Lucien Blackwell, Jannie Blackwell, and Bob Brady. Whether during elections or neighborhood events, Mrs. Bazemore was a familiar, trusted, and welcoming presence whose commitment to civic engagement never wavered.

In 1966, Lottie and her husband became the second African American family to move onto the 5500 block of Whitby Avenue. They helped shape the neighborhood into a close-knit community, and for many years she proudly served as Block Captain. She organized memorable block parties, coordinated popular bus trips to Atlantic City, and was always among the first to lend a helping hand to neighbors in need.

Mrs. Bazemore was an active member of the West Philadelphia Senior Community Center, affectionately known as the "WOW of West Philadelphia," where she enjoyed fellowship with friends old and new. Alongside her sisters, Harriett and Lois, she built lasting friendships and treasured countless memories. She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society Philadelphia Chapter until declining health limited her participation.

Known for her exceptional cooking, Lottie expressed her love through food, often opening her home and kitchen to family, friends, and neighbors. Her kindness, generosity, and quiet strength touched everyone she encountered. She treated people with dignity and respect and leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and community that will continue to inspire those who knew her.

Lottie (Washington) Bazemore will be deeply missed by her family, friends, neighbors, and the countless lives she touched throughout West Philadelphia. Her unwavering commitment to public service and her love for her community have left an indelible mark that will not be forgotten.
