PHA to Begin Demolition of Bartram Village

The Philadelphia Housing Authority has achieved a significant milestone with the approval to begin the demolition of Bartram Village, following an emergency declaration of public safety by Mayor Charelle Parker. Demolition is expected to start in early July 2026.

Bartram Village, which consists of 44 buildings dating back to the 1940s, occupies a 22-acre site that will be redeveloped into 514 units of public housing, as part of a $425 million project.

Gilbane Building Company will lead the demolition and redevelopment of Bartram Village, transforming the outdated barracks-style public housing into a modern neighborhood. This new development will reconnect the site to Kingsessing, Bartram’s Garden, public transit, and nearby open spaces. The new homes will cater to families, seniors, and mixed-income households, with 92% designated as affordable housing. Additionally, as part of the Bartram Village redevelopment, the Philadelphia Housing Authority, in partnership with Pennrose LLC, will construct 64 units of mixed-income rental housing at an offsite location at 2639 S. 58th Street.

Residents of Bartram Village will have the right to return upon completion of the redevelopment.
